Khumani Iron Ore Mine
The scope of work allowed for the design, fabrication, construction and commissioning of the bulk fuel and lube facilities at Khumani King Mine. Included were all drawings, hand over files, project planning, site supervision, and procurement and delivery of materials.
Bulk fuel storage and dispensing facilities:
- The installation of 4 x 82m3 above ground tanks, with a total storage volume of 328m3.
- Installation of fuel offloading and delivery pumps.
- 3 x EMV Refuelling points and 2 x LDV refuelling points.
- Lighting for offloading and refuelling points.
Bulk lube storage and dispensing facilities:
- Four lube dispensing points at the EMV workshops.
- Construction of sumps, sand traps and separator spill control.
- Installation of 5 x 23m3 tanks for five grades of oil.
- Installation of lube offloading and delivery pumps.
- Installation of 2 x EMV refuelling points and 2 x EMV workshop refuelling points.
- Installation of coolant pumps, pipe work, hose reels, meters and nozzles at the EMV workshop.
- Lighting for offloading and refuelling points.
- Installation of a waste oil recovery system comprising of 1 x 23m3 tank, 1 x 2.2m3 tank, pumps and sumps with sump pumps.
A fuel management and data system:
- A fuel management system was installed and tied into the exiting systems.
- Automatic Vehicle Recorders (AVR) were fitted to EMV vehicles.
- Passive tags were fitted onto LDV's
- Data is transferred between sites and a central office by radio modems.
The waste oil recovery system:
- Used for the recovery of waste oil / diesel from the EMV workshop, EMV refuelling bays, the diesel tanks bunded area, the oil tanks bunded area, the tanker offloading spill slabs and the pump bunds.
- The waste oil / diesel is collected from site and transported away for safe disposal.
- The waste oil form the EMV workshop is pumped back to the main storage facility by means of a gear pump.
- Filter drains are placed in the EMV workshop to allow for the draining of the oil from the used oil filters that are removed from the vehicles at service intervals.
General:
- A standby generated was installed to ensure that there is no disruption in the supply of fuel and lubes to the mine.
- A oil store was constructed in the vicinity of the EMV workshop, this store caters for the packaged oil products, as well as grease and coolant.
- A air supply line was installed from the EMV workshops to the bulk storage area and the EMV refuelling islands.
Electrical:
- Fabrication and installation of weather proof electrical distribution boards inclusive of circuit breakers, isolators, contactors, overloads, wiring and labels.
- Stop/ start switches, complete with stands.
- Emergency stop, complete with stand.
- Earthing of tanks and pumps.
- Installation of light poles and electrical cables.
- Installation of cable tray and cable sleeves.
- Electrical supply for the fuel management system.
- Supply and installation of pressure switches.
Trekkopje Uranium Mine
The work at Trekkopje Uranium Mine consisted of civil, mechanical and electrical work.
This included:
- Construction of concrete bund walls, foundations, sumps and plinths for the bulk diesel installation, that consisted of 9 x 82m3 diesel storage tanks.
- The construction of concrete bund walls, foundations, sumps and plinths for the bulk lube installation, that consisted of 4 x 23m3 diesel storage tanks.
- Tanker offloading and refuelling slabs.
- Fabrication of heavy duty crash barriers.
- LDV refuelling slabs.
- Fabrication and installation of stainless steel separator.
- Pump bunds and plinths.
- Transport and installation of all tanks, including installation of sight glass, filter units, vents, dip pipes and drain valves.
- Fabrication and installation of ladders and platforms over tanks and access ladders into the bund wall.
- Installation of diesel and lube offloading and refuelling pumps and meters.
- Installation of all suction and delivery lines.
- Installation of EMV and diesel bowser delivery pumps and motors.
- At the bulk lubes EMV workshop, the fabrication and installation of hose reels, hose reel supports, drip trays and loading arms.
- Drum lubes, coolant and grease installations at the EMV workshops.
- Installation of a fuel management system.

Impala Platinum

Nkomati Joint Venture
Located in the Machadodorp area of the Mpumalanga province, 300 km east of Jhb. Nickel mining takes place by means of an underground shaft as well as by open-pit mining. Oxidised chromitite is also mined as part of the pre-strip of the future open pits.
